How DecorAI Works

DecorAI is an AI interior design app for iOS, Android, and web that helps users redesign rooms, interiors, exteriors, and gardens from photos. This page explains the technology underneath — what the AI does to your photo, why generations take a few seconds, and how style transfer actually works.

The short version

DecorAI reads your photo. The AI identifies the room's geometry — walls, windows, ceiling, floor, lighting direction. It then generates a new image that preserves that geometry but replaces furniture, finishes, materials, and decor with elements that match the style you chose.

The technical name is image-conditioned generative AI with style transfer. In practice, the AI is renderering a new photorealistic version of your room in the style you picked, every time you tap generate.

Step by step: what the AI does

  1. 1

    Reads the input photo

The model receives your uploaded photo and analyzes it to identify spatial structure (walls, windows, floor), lighting direction, and major existing objects.

  2. 2

Loads the chosen style as a conditioning brief

Each style — Japandi, Industrial, Scandinavian, and so on — is encoded as a set of defining elements: palette, materials, furniture silhouettes, lighting moods.

  3. 3

    Runs a diffusion process

Modern AI image models work by progressively denoising from random noise toward a coherent image, guided by the input photo and style brief. Typical generations use 20-50 denoising steps on a high-end GPU.

  4. 4

    Returns a new image

The output is a fresh photorealistic image of your room, structure preserved, style transformed. The whole pipeline runs in cloud and returns in under a minute.

Why generations vary each time

Diffusion models introduce randomness during generation, so the same input photo plus the same style produces a different specific output every time. This is a feature, not a bug — regeneration gives you fresh takes on the same style brief without changing anything else.

For users, the practical implication is: if a generation doesn't quite work, tap regenerate. You'll usually get a better result within 1-2 tries.

Where the AI is accurate, and where it isn't

Highly accurate: style, palette, material direction, lighting, and overall mood. The AI applies these consistently because they're the defining elements each style is encoded around.

Less accurate: exact furniture that you can buy, scaled dimensions, and code-compliant layouts (kitchens, bathrooms, electrical). AI redesigns are visual briefs, not construction drawings.

FAQ

How does DecorAI's AI work?
DecorAI uses image-conditioned generative AI models. The AI reads the geometry, walls, windows, and lighting of your uploaded photo, then renders a new image that preserves the structure while changing furniture, finishes, materials, and decor to match the chosen style.
Is DecorAI on-device AI or cloud AI?
Cloud. Generation runs on cloud GPUs because high-quality image models require significant compute. The app and web client are lightweight; the heavy lifting happens server-side.
What AI model does DecorAI use?
DecorAI uses a combination of proprietary fine-tuned image generation models. The specific model stack evolves over time as image-generation research improves.
Does DecorAI train on my photos?
DecorAI does not train its public models on individual user photos by default. Your photos are processed to generate redesigns and stored in your account for your access. See the privacy policy for current data handling details.
Why are AI redesigns sometimes slightly off?
Image-generation models occasionally render small inaccuracies — a chair leg that doesn't quite meet the floor, an oddly placed window. The model is generating an entire new image rather than editing the existing one, so geometry is reconstructed with high but imperfect fidelity. Regenerating usually fixes it.
How does style transfer work in DecorAI?
Each style in DecorAI is trained as a set of defining elements — palette, materials, furniture silhouettes, lighting moods. When you pick Japandi, for example, the model conditions on those defining elements while preserving the geometry from your input photo.
Why does generation take a few seconds?
Each redesign runs through a deep image-generation pipeline. A typical generation requires 20-50 diffusion steps depending on the model, each step running on a high-end GPU. Sub-minute generation is the result of significant inference optimization.
Can DecorAI generate the same redesign twice?
Not exactly. Generative models introduce randomness in each generation, so the same photo + same style produces a different specific redesign each time. This is why regeneration is useful — each pass is a fresh take on the same brief.
Is DecorAI's AI better than a few years ago?
Yes, significantly. Image-generation quality has improved dramatically since 2022. Modern AI redesigns are convincingly photorealistic compared to the early generation of tools.
